State Rep. David Allen Welter, R-Morris, issued the following statement after the Illinois House of Representatives voted along party lines Friday evening to approve House Bill 2777 creating new legislative district maps for the next 10 years:
“I reminded my colleagues that President Barack Obama has spoken out against gerrymandering and back in 2016 when he visited Springfield called us to embody in both our words and our actions a better kind of politics, one that is less divisive and more solutions-oriented, rooted in the need to look at each other as fellow citizens and neighbors, not as Democrats or Republicans. Unfortunately, Illinois Democrats have not heeded the former President’s advice. They have passed a hyper-partisan map designed to maximize their control over state government for the next decade. As a result, Illinois families can expect a continued push for higher taxes, more state mandates on our schools, and the same failed policies of the Mike Madigan era that chase more jobs and job creators out of our state.”
Rep. Welter has served the 75th District since July 2016, which includes portions of Grundy, Kendall, LaSalle and Will Counties.
