Rep. Welter statement on Governor’s State of the State/Budget Address

Illinois House Republican Conference Chair Rep. David Welter (R-Morris) issued the following statement in response to Governor JB Pritzker’s Budget Address delivered at the Old State Capitol today:

“It wasn’t so long ago that Governor Pritzker tried to bully the state into passing a graduated income tax – threatening huge cuts or huge tax increases if it did not pass. The people of Illinois called his bluff in 2020, resoundingly rejecting the graduated income tax. Now, without a graduated income tax, he’s telling us everything is great and painting a rosy picture of our state’s fiscal health while ignoring the causes of Illinois’ decades-long fiscal instability. It calls into question his credibility and his honesty with the public when it comes to the budget. What he’s not telling you, is that this is all temporary, that any change in our state’s current financial situation is not because of good management – it’s the direct result of a massive federal bailout. These federal dollars are temporary and won’t always be there to make JB Pritzker look good.”

Representative Welter serves the 75th District which includes portions of Kendall, Grundy, LaSalle and Will Counties.
